Borussia Dortmund returned to winning ways in the Bundesliga this evening, beating Bayer Leverkusen 2-1 in a close affair at the BayArena thanks to headed goals from Aaron Anselmino and Karim Adeyemi. Leverkusen scored late on to make things nervy for Dortmund, but BVB held on for the win and left Leverkusen with much-needed three points.

Dortmund have struggled of late, so a win against the other candidate for the best team in the Bundesliga that isn’t Bayern Munich will do everyone the world of good. Now BVB will prepare to host Leverkusen on Tuesday, this time in the DFB-Pokal. Here are the candidates for tonight’s Man of the Match in Dortmund’s 2-1 win against Leverkusen.

Waldemar Anton

Anton has faced plenty of criticism since joining Dortmund last summer, much of it warranted, but I thought he was really solid this evening. He is much more comfortable in the middle of a back three, as shown by this performance.

Karim Adeyemi

At 1-0 the game was wide open and it felt like a matter of when rather than if Leverkusen would get the equalizer. Adeyemi’s excellent header to put Dortmund up by two goals made things much safer, and gave BVB the cushion to claim all three points.

Aaron Anselmino

It’s clear that Anselmino is still a prospect. He’s raw. But he’s clearly a good prospect, and he proves as much this evening. The goal was well-taken, and he made some big plays on the defensive end too.

Daniel Svensson

Svensson was one of Dortmund’s strongest performers on both sides of the ball. He was active in defense throughout, working hard up and down the pitch, and contributed the assist for BVB’s opening goal.
