Bayern Munich was not super-sharp or overly great during its rugged 3-1 win over St. Pauli.
Sometimes games have an aesthetic, sometimes they are a street fight, and sometimes they are just a total grind to work through.
AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementThis victory was — undoubtedly — a grind for the Bavarians, but sporting director Christoph Freund saw his squad test its mettle and show its mentality against a very game St. Pauli team.
“It was obviously a tough match. St. Pauli played well and got off to a perfect start with the 1-0 lead. We controlled the game but didn’t create that many clear-cut chances. It was a really intense game right to the end. But at the end of the day, it was a fantastic win in stoppage time that gives us a lot of energy and shows the character of the team. I love such wins,” Freund said (as captured by @iMiaSanMia).
While tough and sometimes ugly, it was surely a satisfying win for those around the team. Too many times in the past, Bayern Munich could just not dig down deep enough to pull out this kind of game. Fortunately for the fans in attendance at the Allianz Arena and those watching from home, Bayern Munich was able to do just that against St. Pauli.
