A combative AS Monaco dominate PSG and get back to winning ways!

United from start to finish against the reigning European champions, the Rouge et Blanc showed character to win against Paris at the Stade Louis-II in the big match of the 14th matchday in Ligue 1 McDonald's (1-0).

They needed to show a different side of themselves, and they did! Thanks to a very solid performance against Paris Saint-Germain, the AS Monaco players snatched a victory in the second half at the Stade Louis-II (1-0), in the marquee match of this 14th round of Ligue 1 McDonald’s. ✍️

The context 📅

Only three days after a draw against Pafos in the Champions League (2-2),Over 2,000 kilometers away, the Rouge et Blanc faced a (very) tough challenge: hosting the reigning European and French champions. Their objective is to withstand the pressure against a team the Monaco club hadn’t beaten in the top flight since February 2023.

PSG is a team that plays at a Champions League level. There are many matches like this in Ligue 1; it's part of the season. It's a home game against the best team in France in recent years. It's a great challenge, and we have everything to gain. We'll need to put in a good performance.

The XI 👥

To try and compete with one of the best teams in Europe, coach Sébastien Pocognoli decided to stick with the 4-2-3-1 formation used in Cyprus. The only notable changes were Jordan Teze moving into midfield in the absence of the suspended Denis Zakaria, while Thilo Kehrer returned to his place in defence.

The scenario 🎞

Following the ceremonial kick-off by Olympic champions Armand Duplantis and Letsile Tebogo alongside Ludovic Giuly, AS Monaco started this clash with determination. An early corner from Lamine Camara found Mohammed Salisu in the penalty area, but his header found no one (4′). Fifteen minutes later, Fabian Ruiz would attempt a shot for PSG (20′).

A masterclass from both ‘keepers

The game finally heated up in the second quarter of an hour, with Aleksandr Golovin trying a curling shot (22′). Kvaratskhelia would respond (25′), followed by Vitinha from the edge of the box, buts Lukáš Hradecký intervened (26′). It was end-to-end action and Takumi Minamino took advantage of a good cross from Folarin Balogun to attempt a left-footed volley which Lucas Chevalier intercepted (28′)!

Salisu comes close to opening the scoring

PSG also looked dangerous, with Lee firing home a powerful shot (32′) and then Kvaratskhelia curling a shot from which Hradecký made a fine save (35′). Ultimately, it was Monaco who created the two best chances, with Mohammed Salisu’s header grazing the post (34′), before the Ghanaian scored from a corner, only for the goal to be disallowed for offside (40′).

The pace dropped considerably at the start of the second half, although Paris threatened through Mayulu, first with a pass to Kvaratskhelia (54′), then with a header (55′). Sébastien Pocognoli’s men also caused problems for the Parisians from set pieces, and Salisu was again found with a header (62′). But it was ultimately a cutback from Golo’ that set up Takumi Minamino to open the score (1-0, 68′)!

A crucial victory requiring character

The Japanese player scored his second goal of the week, his third this season in Ligue 1, assisted by the Russian. The Rouge et Blanc then entered a new phase, especially after their captain was sent off by Mr. Turpin (80′). Down to ten men, they were briefly threatened by João Neves’ free kick (82′) and then by Vitinha’s volley, which was saved by Hradecký (93′), but they held firm.

AS Monaco thus snatched a prestigious victory against Paris Saint-Germain in a nail-biting finish during seven minutes of added time (1-0)! Three precious points to build on next week’s away match against Brest (7pm). DAGHE MUNEGU!!! 🇲🇨
