One of Disney’s Most Traumatic Tearjerkers Gets Overtaken by Disney's Disastrous Sci-Fi Sequel at Box Office

After a month in theaters, Tron: Ares has overtaken one of Disney's most traumatic children's movies, Bridge to Terabithia, at the global box office.

After more than a month of release in theaters worldwide, Tron: Ares is turning out to be an even bigger bomb than expected. Earlier projections saw the film hitting the $170 million mark worldwide, but, as things stand, it'll likely fall short of the $150 million milestone as well. The long-awaited third installment of the Tron series arrived in theaters a full 15 years after its predecessor, Tron: Legacy, which was dismissed as a flop despite grossing more than $400 million globally. Tron: Ares, on the other hand, has failed to match up to even Disney's other underperformers this year — Captain America: Brave New World, Snow White, Thunderbolts*, and Elio. However, the movie has also overtaken a handful of past Disney hits, the most recent of which is the tearjerker Bridge to Terabithia.

Based on a book by Katherine Paterson, the movie was released in 2007 to excellent reviews. It followed two sixth-graders who create a magical wonderland in the woods to escape real-life traumas. Bridge to Terabithia remains an uncommonly dark children's film, even all these years later. The movie dealt with grave themes such as abandonment, bullying, and even death. Directed by Gábor Csupó and starring a young Josh Hutcherson and AnnaSophia Robb in the lead roles, the film now holds a "certified fresh" 85% score on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes. The critics' consensus on the website reads, "Bridge to Terabithia is a faithful adaptation of a beloved children's novel and a powerful portrayal of love, loss, and imagination through children's eyes."

Disney Has Two Major Movies Lined Up

Produced on a reported budget of $17 million, the movie ended up grossing a healthy $137 million worldwide. Tron: Ares' $140 million lifetime haul puts it just ahead on the all-time charts, although it must be mentioned that Tron: Ares cost a reported $220 million to produce, and millions more to market. The movie will reportedly lose Disney as much as $130 million, leaving the studio in a tight spot. The Mouse House will now have to put all its money on the upcoming Zootopia 2, which many expect to do Frozen 2 and Incredible 2-level business, and James Cameron's Avatar: Fire and Ash, which is one of the most anticipated movies of the year. You can watch Bridge to Terabithia at home, and stay tuned to Collider for more updates.
