When adapting a film beloved by a huge fanbase, any production company runs the risk of immediate, unforgiving backlash. With that in mind, the eventual product must tick every single box and be almost faultless to avoid brutal comparisons to the original. In the case of 2024's Mean Girls, an adaptation of the mid-noughties chick flick classic regularly cited as the best of its genre, this was a fate felt with force. Especially considering it had only been two decades since the original, and despite a musical twist on the story, Mean Girls was torn apart by both fans and critics for its inability to reach the high bar of its predecessor. But what is worth the hate?

Perhaps the answer is no, with Mean Girls, when judged on its own terms, boasting plenty of positives. From strong performances to catchy musical numbers, the film certainly isn't a shade of what came before, but let that take nothing away from the quality it does have. Now, over a year since its controversial debut, you can make up your own mind on the movie as it officially joins Netflix this December 5. Starring Angourie Rice and Reneé Rapp, the movie grossed over $100 million worldwide, almost tripling its reported $36 million production budget. A synopsis for the film reads:

"New student Cady Heron (Rice) is welcomed into the top of the social food chain by the elite group of popular girls called "The Plastics," ruled by the conniving queen bee Regina George (Rapp) and her minions Gretchen (Bebe Wood) and Karen (Avantika). However, when Cady makes the major misstep of falling for Regina's ex-boyfriend Aaron Samuels (Christopher Briney), she finds herself prey in Regina's crosshairs. As Cady sets to take down the group's apex predator with the help of her outcast friends Janis (Auli'i Cravalho) and Damian (Jaquel Spivey), she must learn how to stay true to herself while navigating the most cutthroat jungle of all: high school."

The Original 'Mean Girls' Earned More at the Box Office

Despite two decades of ticket inflation on its side, the 2024 Mean Girls still fell short of its predecessor in total box office revenue. As mentioned previously, the recent reboot earned just over $100 million in global revenue, roughly $30 million less than the 2004 original. Split between $86 million in domestic revenue and a further $44 million from overseas markets, the $130 million earned by 2004's Mean Girls wasn't enough to help it into the list of the 40-highest-grossing movies of the year, but takes nothing off the shine of its glowingly fetch legacy.

Mean Girls (2024) is streaming on Netflix this December.
