In the age of streaming, it can be risky to get attached to a new TV show after just one season, because the show runs a significant risk of getting prematurely cancelled if it's not an instant and overwhelming success. The more unique and creatively bold shows are especially at risk of cancellation, whether it be after one season or multiple seasons, as demonstrated by the recent fates of shows like Étoile, Mythic Quest, Based on a True Story, and Found.
So many excellent and underrated TV shows have been cancelled too soon in recent years, including Prime Video's 2024 historical fantasy dramedy, My Lady Jane. The series is a hilarious and clever retelling of the story of Lady Jane Grey (Emily Bader) with a fantastical twist, based on the novel of the same name by Cynthia Hand, Brodi Ashton, and Jodi Meadows. For those looking for a new show to binge-watch over the holidays, My Lady Jane is the perfect choice.
What Is Prime Video's 'My Lady Jane' About?
My Lady Jane kicks off with the show's hilarious storybook-style narrator (Oliver Chris) telling the unfortunate story of what happened to the real Lady Jane Grey: she was forced into a marriage that she didn't want, was then made the Queen of England seemingly at random, and was finally beheaded for treason. In My Lady Jane, though, the narrator rewrites Jane's history. Lady Jane Grey is a happy, ambitious young woman who is much more interested in studying medicine than she is in getting married. Her family needs money after her father's death, though, so her mother forces her into an arranged marriage with Lord Guildford Dudley (Edward Bluemel). Jane unsuccessfully tries to get out of her marriage multiple times, but, as it turns out, Guildford is very different from how she thought he would be. Despite her initial opposition to marriage, Jane and Guildford start to really get to know each other, and Jane finds herself reconsidering her feelings for him.

Posts By Emmanuel Ronquillo Aug 3, 2024Jane's marriage and complicated feelings for her husband are just the tip of the iceberg of her problems, though. Jane's cousin, King Edward (Jordan Peters), is dying. He believes that he's sick, but he's actually being poisoned, and he has no idea who is trying to kill him. Edward has, unbeknownst to Jane, named her his successor for when he dies, which puts her at risk when she inevitably has to step in for him. Sure enough, Edward's condition worsens and Jane soon becomes Queen, making her whole life much more complicated. Aside from having to protect herself from the unknown person who poisoned Edward, Jane also has to find a way to unite England, which is divided among the marginalized Ethians (those who can turn into animals), and the dominant Verity (those who cannot). Jane fights for Ethians to be treated as equal to Verity in the eyes of the law, but the rest of England is not so happy about this, putting her in even more danger when she starts to challenge the status quo as their new Queen.
'My Lady Jane' Is One of the Best Romance Shows of the Last Few Years

My Lady Jane is a funny and suspenseful historical fantasy series, but at its core, it is one of the best TV romances in recent history. Jane is reluctant to marry Guildford based on his reputation, and because she has never been interested in marriage. She goes to hide out from her family in a pub one night and falls in love at first sight with a random guy who ends up being very rude to her. Sure enough, at her wedding, Jane learns that this is Guildford. She tries to get out of marrying him to no avail, but the two soon strike up a deal. Guildford is secretly an Ethian who can't control his powers, and Jane is a brilliant student of medicine. If she can find a way to cure him of his Ethianism, then he will grant her an end to their marriage. Not only do Jane and Guildford initially hate each other, but this marriage goes against both of their goals for their lives, and it poses other dangers for them that they will soon have to deal with.
Jane and Guildford's romance embraces so many excellent romance tropes: marriage of convenience, enemies to lovers, and forbidden romance. In this version of England, it is illegal for an Ethian and Verity to be married, so even if Jane and Guildford were to ever fall in love, they would be killed if Guildford's secret ever came out. Thus, Jane is put in a very visible and dangerous position as the Queen of England, as she tries to balance making real changes to England with protecting her life and figuring out her complex feelings for Guildford. Jane and Guildford's relationship develops over the first season in some really surprising and delightful ways as the higher stakes loom in the background, resulting in a truly unforgettable romance. The two have sharply funny banter, impossible odds against them, and an underlying deep care for each other, making them one of the best romances on TV in a long time. My Lady Jane was sadly cancelled too soon, but the first season tells a mostly complete story, giving a satisfying story arc for its main romance.
My Lady Jane is available to stream on Prime Video.
