D&D's Best Class Just Got Even Better

D&D's classes have seen numerous changes since its 2024 rework, but the best Dungeons & Dragons class just got better thanks to an update.

By its very nature, Dungeons & Dragons is always changing. From its various editions in the past to Unearthed Arcana playtests now, fans know to expect changes at some point. After D&D 2024 reworked 5e rules extensively, numerous classes and subclasses were altered, and that list just continues to grow. Now, the best class has gotten even better thanks to a new update.

Recently, D&D released new books focused on the Forgotten Realms, which included new subclasses, backgrounds, and feats. Now, nothing against Faerûn, but the Forgotten Realms have gotten a little played out. It's a great setting, but so are ones like Dragonlance and Eberron, which get little attention by comparison. Maybe that's why I was so exctied to try out what Eberron: Forge of the Artificer had in store for us.

D&D's Newest Eberron Book Makes Artificers Even Better

An artificer forging the head for an automaton in D&D

I was already a huge fan of the Artificer. I tend to choose it any chance that I get, even if my character, species, and personality is always new. For fun, I may switch it up as a Bard or Fighter, but there's something about Artificer that's always calling me back. Now, the newest D&D book offers up five subclasses for Artificer with some notable changes.

The biggest improvement overall is really the way the book handles Replicate Magic Item, a new feat that basically takes the place of Infusion. If you hate D&D rules that require you to find ingredients and materials (like I do), then you're in luck. Gone are the days where you have to get the base item first. The rest of the idea behind Infusion remains intact, but Replicate Magic Item is a simplified, and arguably overpowered, version of Infusion.

Why Artificers Are Just So Darn Cool

An Artificer raises their forging hammer, as the torso of a Warforged hangs beside them in Dungeons and Dragons. An Artificer raises their forging hammer, as the torso of a Warforged hangs beside them in Dungeons and Dragons.

Even before this change, Artificer was the best class D&D had to offer. It's got the best of both worlds from casters and non-casters, along with a host of gimmicks that truly make it unique. From laying out traps to creating some truly bonkers inventions, I've had a blast with Artificer over the years. One aspect I like most about it is that you can play it again and again, and it never feels exactly the same. There's always something new to try.

It was a notable missing class from the original D&D 2024 rulebooks, so it's great to see Artificer finally coming back in a major way. I've had a lot of fun diving into Artificer with the new rules, and it's done nothing to change my mind that it's the best class. Thankfully, the new Eberron book for Dungeons & Dragons just makes Artificer even better.
