The Philadelphia Phillies must do everything in their power to re-sign Kyle Schwarber this winter. Schwarber is coming off a second-place finish for the National League MVP award and is one of the biggest fan favorites in Philadelphia.
Schwarber is headed for a monumental contract in terms of designated hitter history. He's earned a huge payday, and the Phillies are the team that should give it to him.
Ryan Finkelstein of Just Baseball recently projected Schwarber would re-sign with the Phillies on a massive four-year, $128 million deal this winter.
..."Entering his age-33 season, coming off four very healthy and productive seasons, there is no reason to think Schwarber can’t hold up as a primary DH for years to come," Finkelstein wrote. "With that said, four years should be a nice sweet spot for Schwarber, getting the same length of contract he signed as a 29-year-old free agent, but with a lot more money coming his way over the life of the deal."
The Phillies could certainly afford him at this price, while some other teams in the league wouldn't be able to. The Cincinnati Reds are rumored to be interested in the slugger, but the Phillies almost certainly won't be outbid by the Reds.
The Boston Red Sox are reportedly eyeing Schwarber, too, but the Phillies have the money and pull to sign him to a massive deal without much stress. It would be quite shocking to see Schwarber in a different uniform next season.
