Batman: Knightfall Animated Movie Promises Comic-Accurate Bane, Unlike Dark Knight Rises

DC's new animated movie adaptation of Batman: Knightfall will give us a comic-accurate Bane, unlike Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight Rises.

DC’s new animated movie adaptation of Batman: Knightfall will give us the version of Bane we never got in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises. Knightfall is the famous story arc in which Bane broke Batman’s back over his knee; it’s the reason Bane became such an iconic Batman villain.

Warner Bros. Animation is currently in production on a series of animated movies that will directly adapt the comics from the page to the screen. The first part, bearing the wordy title Batman: Knightfall Part 1: Knightfall, is set to be released in 2026, and it’s already promising a more faithful portrayal of Bane than we’ve seen in previous movies.

Nolan borrowed elements of the Knightfall comics when he pitted Christian Bale’s Batman against Bane in The Dark Knight Rises. Much like in the comics, Bane breaks Batman’s back over his knee, and Bruce struggles to recover from his spinal injury and get back to action. But other than that, it’s a very different story — with a very different version of Bane.

This new animated movie will be a more direct adaptation of the comic (via Deadline). It’ll see Bane free Batman’s rogues’ gallery from Arkham Asylum, pushing the Bat to his limits. The Dark Knight Rises was loosely inspired by Knightfall (emphasis on “loosely”), but this animated film is essentially being envisioned as an animated version of the original comic book.

The Dark Knight Rises Offered A Very Different Take On Bane

The version of Bane played by Tom Hardy in The Dark Knight Rises was a very different take on the character than what we see in the comics. Hardy’s Bane was, indeed, a criminal mastermind like his comic book counterpart, but he turned out to be a henchman on a mission, not someone on a personal quest to destroy Batman like comic Bane.

Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy set out to ground the Batman mythology in the real world. His movies weren’t totally realistic, but they tamped down the fantastical elements of the comics. The Scarecrow’s psychological warfare, for example, is explained away by chemicals. So, Nolan was never going to do a full-on jacked-up comic-book Bane.

Tom Hardy's Bane Is Iconic (Despite The Comic Book Differences)

Despite being very different from his comic book counterpart, Hardy’s Bane is still iconic. Hardy gave an unforgettable performance, affecting a delightfully theatrical accent, and the mask and costume gave him a hard-edged militaristic aesthetic. Batman: Knightfall will have a more comic-accurate Bane, but Hardy rose to the challenge of following up Heath Ledger’s Oscar-winning Joker.
