Warning! Spoilers ahead for Marvel's Ultimate Universe: Two Years In #1!

Marvel just revealed the grim truth about its Multiverse: it is overrun with zombies. Marvel Zombies was a novelty when it first dropped in 2005, but over the past two decades it has become a franchise unto itself, including an MCU adaptation. Now, Marvel has confirmed that practically every corner of its vast Multiverse is crawling with flesh-eating undead.

Ultimate Universe: Two Years In #1, written by Deniz Camp and Alex Paknadel, with art by Lee Ferguson, Francesco Manna, and more. In the issue, a group of heroes' attempt to fix their timeline by merging it with another.

This is complicated by the Multiverse's proliferation of zombies. It is a somber extension of Marvel Zombies' success.

Zombies Have Overtaken The Majority Of The Marvel Multiverse, And Aren't Slowing Down

"You wouldn't believe how hard it was finding a universe free of zombies," an alternate version of the Phoenix grimly notes in the preview for Ultimate Universe: Two Years In #1. It is a throwaway line, but one that opens the door to existentially horrific implications. The line suggests that zombies are the rule in the Marvel Universe, rather than the exception.

It's a chilling idea. The Marvel Multiverse, as it is understood today, is made of branching timelines, the way it was depicted in the MCU Loki series. Ultimate Universe: Two Years In #1, perhaps inadvertently, as implied that the majority of existing realities in the Multiverse are zombie-infested timelines. That existence has a nasty habit of life giving way to undeath.

This paints a bleaker picture of the Marvel Multiverse than usual. Yet it does make a certain degree of sense. The barrier between life and death is downright flimsy in Marvel lore; resurrections and returns from beyond the grave are commonplace. Zombies are just a natural, if uncontrollable extension of that.

Marvel Zombies initially came about as a way to parlay the success of Image Comics' The Walking Dead and the revival of pop culture interest in the zombie genre. Now, it has become a staple of Marvel Comics lore. Zombie versions of Marvel heroes have become a go-to for many Multiverse-hopping storylines.

It seems that, just like zombie outbreaks spread relentlessly among a population once they have started, the spread from universe to universe is similarly nigh-impossible to prevent. In other words, according to Ultimate Universe: Two Years In #1, the Marvel Multiverse is mostly undead, a horrifying concept that changes how fans look at its living characters, as more precious than ever.

Ultimate Universe: Two Years In #1 will be available December 3, 2025 from Marvel Comics.
