An important Ahsoka star reveals they are not returning for season 2. Season 1 of the live-action Star Wars show was released in 2023 and largely revolved around the return of Grand Admiral Thrawn (Lars Mikkelsen) during the reign of the New Republic. Thrawn's new allies included three Dathomirian Nightsisters known as the Great Mothers.
Claudia Black, who played Great Mother Klothow in season 1, shared during an interview with Bleeding Cool that she will not be back for season 2. She clarified that the original plan for her was to come back after season 2 was renewed. However, with the new season filming in London, and Black being a single mother living in Los Angeles, she did not receive the pay needed to make filming overseas possible for her.
Black admits that "it was very sad" not to be in Ahsoka season 2 and that she emailed showrunner Dave Filoni thanking him for the opportunity. She also discusses the unique experience of working with the Volume. Check out her comments below:
Well, I'm going to be transparent. They picked up season two, picked me up with it, and then Disney, which is structuring things differently these days, could not pay me what I needed to be paid as a single mother to keep all my responsibilities going at home in Los Angeles, because they were filming in London. It was not something that they could make happen, and therefore, I had to bow out for season two.
It was very sad for me. I sent an email to Dave Filoni thanking him, and I said, "What a ride!" Everyone like me who grew up in the 70s and 80s has always been into the Star Wars universe, and it's a very playful environment to work in. I'm grateful that I got to be in that universe, lovely people, lovely directors, interesting to work on 'The Volume.' Their particular set, which is full of technology that George Lucas had dreamed about and talked about, and people thought he was crazy to suddenly be in that technology, see it working in real time, and talk to the company that had realized that technology.
It is unconfirmed whether the role of Great Mother Klothow has been recast after Black's exit, but it seems likely given that she was supposed to return and the events of Ahsoka season 1's ending. The Great Mothers were last seen returning to the main galaxy and to their home planet of Dathomir alongside Grand Admiral Thrawn.
Along with helping Grand Admiral Thrawn on Peridea and now seemingly setting up a base of operations on Dathomir, Thrawn and the Great Mothers had an agreement to load crates from the catacombs onto the Eye of Sion. The crates presumably contain bodies that Klothow and the other Great Mothers will resurrect as part of their larger plan.

Beyond her important role in the show, Black's comments highlight a larger issue in the entertainment industry. Lucasfilm opted to shoot season 2 in London instead of Los Angeles for financial reasons. Ahsoka is far from the only show to do this, with many productions filming overseas instead of Los Angeles, but this is challenging for the extensive number of actors and crew members who live in Los Angeles and rely on work in the area.
As for when fans can expect to see the stories of Grand Admiral Thrawn and the Great Mothers continue, Ahsoka season 2 has wrapped filming in London, and it is expected to debut in 2026. The new season will feature the returns of Ahsoka Tano (Rosario Dawson), Sabine Wren (Natasha Liu Bordizzo), Hera Syndulla (Mary Elizabeth Winstead), and Ezra Bridger (Eman Esfandi). After Ray Stevenson's passing, Rory McCann has taken over the role of Baylan Skoll.
