Red Dead Redemption 2 is one of the most beloved western games ever made, with an incredibly active player-base even seven years after its release in 2018. However, if you feel like you're ready for something new to take RDR2's place after all these years, the perfect alternative is about to hit PS Plus in just a few days.
There's arguably no better game to replace Red Dead Redemption 2 than its predecessor, Red Dead Redemption 1, which hits PlayStation Plus for free on December 2 for Extra and Premium subscribers. If you haven't played the original RDR1 in a while (or at all), it's the perfect time to experience the epic story in its entirety.
Red Dead Redemption 1 Comes To PS Plus On December 2
Back To The Beginning
While die-hard fans continue to get their hopes up for an eventual Red Dead Redemption 3 announcement, you can only replay Red Dead Redemption 2 so many times before you need something else to scratch the same itch. Luckily, the original Red Dead Redemption is rolling out on PlayStation Plus on December 2 for the Premium and Extra tiers.
Believe it or not, many players never had the chance to play the original Red Dead Redemption, largely due to it being released on an older generation of consoles initially and the fact Red Dead Redemption 2 is a more modern game. But now that the original is going to be free on PS Plus, there's never been a better time for players to experience the full story arc between both games.
If You're Tired Of RDR2, Give RDR1 A Try
RDR1 Is Essential To The Red Dead Experience

Red Dead Redemption 1 and Red Dead Redemption 2 are deeply interconnected stories that enrich one another when experienced together. RDR2 serves as a prequel, revealing the rise and fall of the Van der Linde gang and providing crucial context for John Marston’s character arc.
By exploring Arthur Morgan’s perspective, players gain a deeper understanding of the events, relationships, and betrayals that shape John’s world in RDR1. Playing both games enhances the experience because each title expands the narrative of the other.
There aren't very many narratives in games that span across two games so seamlessly as the Red Dead Redemption games, and playing RDR2 immediately after RDR1 (or vice versa) is the best way to experience the story and all its nuanced connections across games. Whether you're a longtime fan of the Red Dead Redemption franchise or never got around to trying the first game, December 2 is going to be a great day for PS Plus subscribers.
