The Boston Red Sox made big moves to bolster their roster last season, but it wasn't enough to win their division or get to the World Series. This offseason, the Red Sox are seemingly prepared to make more big moves.
They've already added St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Sonny Gray in a big trade this winter. But this move is likely just the first of many for Boston.
Jon Heyman of the New York Post recently reported the Red Sox were targeting Philadelphia Phillies star JT Realmuto in free agency this winter. Realmuto is projected to sign a solid $34 million deal, per The Athletic's Jim Bowden.
..."The Red Sox are considering signing up to two of these five big-time lineup enhancements: uberpopular Kyle Schwarber, plus Pete Alonso, Kazuma Okamoto and J.T. Realmuto, as well as last winter’s big pickup Alex Bregman," Heyman wrote.
Adding Realmuto would be a huge move for the Red Sox while staying on the affordable side. This would allow them to target another star like Alex Bregman or Kyle Schwarber without breaking the bank.
Realmuto hit .257 with 12 home runs and 52 RBIs this season for the Phillies. The three-time Silver Slugger winner, who also has a pair of Gold Gloves at catcher, has led the league in appearances behind the plate in four of the last five seasons.
Realmuto is favored to land back with the Phillies, but the Red Sox could make a push to steal the star on a two or three-year deal worth around $18 million per season. It would fit both sides perfectly.
