Ending the trilogy started by Final Fantasy 7 Remake and continued in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth is going to be. For better or worse, this reimagining of the 1998 classic has expanded, altered, surprised, frustrated, and everything in between.
While we don't yet know what to expect from Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 3, (aside from a few small hints), I think we can reasonably work out what the third and final entry in the trilogy will be called. Remake, Rebirth, and... let's break it down.
Final Fantasy 7 Remake's Title Is In Front Of Us
We just have to eliminate some possibilities
Sephiroth creating a fireball in his hand in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth.
Based on the first two titles — Remake and Rebirth — we can assume Square Enix is sticking with the Final Fantasy 7 R-something format for the third game. Unless Square decides to mess with us all and call it something completely different like Final Fantasy 7 Derek, which I admit, would be pretty funny.
Let's start by eliminating some of the possibilities. One of the more popular theories is that the third game will be called Final Fantasy 7 Reborn. While I absolutely understand the thinking behind this, and agree it would make perfect sense thematically, my suspicion is that the marketing folk at Square Enix would be too concerned about Reborn sounding a little too similar to Rebith and causing confusion among more casual fans.
I think by a similar logic we can get rid of Requiem (thanks to the upcoming Resident Evil), and Redemption. The latter is partly on account of Red Dead, but also because, thematically, I don't really see how Redemption makes much sense. We can also do away with Reunion, because Square already used that on Crisis Core: Final Fantasy 7 Reunion. Again, the marketing department at Square would be in ruin.
So What Will Final Fantasy Remake Part 3 Be Called?
It's right there
Think along the lines of Reborn and Reunion. Themes of second chances, resurrection, coming together again. These are all concepts the last two remakes have played around with, the first game in the trilogy dipping its toe in the waters of change before Rebirth went off and completely did its own thing.
Considering this, I'm fairly confident that we can expect the game to be called Final Fantasy 7 Return. Whether that's in reference to returning to the original timeline of the 1998 game, Aerith's return from the dead (that would be a heck of a change), or even the concept of returning to the planet. I probably don't need to tell you, after all, that Aerith's theme is called Return to the Planet, which, for my money, is probably the biggest indicator.
The current release window for Final Fantasy 7 Remake Part 3/Final Fantasy 7 Return is 2027, so hopefully we don't have to wait too long to find out that I was either completely on the money or laughably wrong. Personally I'm hoping for the former, but feel free to rinse me if it turns out I screwed up.
