Warning! This article contains MAJOR SPOILERS for Stranger Things season 5, part 1.

Vecna is back for the final season of Stranger Things, and he appears to have had a major makeover in terms of how he looks. As The Party prepares to take on the final boss in their years-long campaign against the evil of the Upside Down, they are anxious to find Vecna.

The team have methodically combed through many parts of the Upside Down, mapping out the area, and seeking out the king of the monsters to no avail. However, in Stranger Things season 5, episode 4, Vecna comes to them in the surface world, but their familiar rival looks a little different.

Vecna's New Look In Stranger Things Season 5 Explained

Stranger Things season 4 revealed that Vecna was once an ordinary man, at least in terms of how he looked. Henry Creel was the first child to be taken into the Lab and experimented on to try and hone his powers. As such, he was assigned the number One, and until Eleven came along, he was by far the strongest person in the Lab.

However, he was jealous and didn't want anyone to challenge him, so he turned on his peers and killed everyone else in the Lab, aside from Eleven. Eleven was able to overpower her former friend and sent him hurtling into the Upside Down, and on the way, he began to burn, break, and peel away, becoming something else entirely.

In Stranger Things season 4, Vecna looked close to human, with heavily scarred flesh and exposed muscles throughout his body. But in Stranger Things season 5, Vecna has lost so much more of his humanity and transformed into something that seems a lot more akin to the monsters in the Upside Down.

All over Vecna's body, there are organic-looking branches that make him resemble a human combined with a tree. Rather than a solid torso and limbs, all of Vecna appears to be distinctly shaped and partitioned like knotted roots of a tree folded over themselves.

This ultimately makes him look sort of like Groot, the living tree from the Guardians of the Galaxy films, but much darker, more grotesque, and monstrous. His ability to distort and wield parts of his body as a weapon also resembles Groot as he shoots out extended branches from his arms to grab and impale victims.

It's an interesting choice to change up Vecna's look so drastically between Stranger Things season 4's ending and season 5, but it has managed to make him even less human and much more terrifying as the show continues into its final season.
