No more half-stepping. No more equivocating. No more hand-wringing.It’s time to get irrational, Bears fans. (Not that we haven’t already been for our entire lives.)For those of us holding back, Friday’s win over the defending champion Philadelphia Eagles gave us permission to come out and say it with our chest:The Chicago Bears can win the Super Bowl this year. They really can.I’d be nuts to proclaim that they will win, especially given that we can’t figure out what version of any NFL team we’re getting each week. In fact, this might be the least predictable NFL season we’ve seen in recent memory. I mean, the Kansas City Chiefs are on the verge of missing the playoffs after playing in three straight Super Bowls. Nothing makes sense.Which is exactly why you can’t rule the Bears out. Not anymore. You can point to the circumstances of their wins and the middling-to-bad stretch of opponents that helped them kick their winning streak if you want. But remember: they just spent the last three years losing to those teams on a weekly basis. At some point, you are what your record says you are. The Chicago Bears are 9-3. They’re good. And they just beat the defending champions, who also had come into that game 8-4. What more do you need? They beat one of the NFL’s best teams on the road. They completely owned one of the league’s most physical teams in the trenches and busted out more than 200 yards rushing against Jalen Carter, Jordan Davis, and the Eagles’ Monstars-level defensive front. And they did it with Caleb Williams once again not having a lights-out game, though he delivered the kill shot when it mattered. They’re not even operating at full power, and they’re 9-3. Let it sink in. Let it wash over you. Let it get you to start saying and thinking insane things about this team’s potential.Sure, it’ll be a different beast when the playoffs come around, and the Bears have to face more seasoned teams. But that’s also why they brought in Joe Thuney, Kevin Byard, Grady Jarrett, and T.J. Edwards—for moments just like that. Not to mention their head coach Ben Johnson has coached plenty in the playoffs the last few seasons, including in an NFC Championship Game.No one told these Bears they weren’t supposed to be ready yet, and they haven’t gotten the memo. They didn’t know they were supposed to be a get-right game for the scuffling reigning champs. They don’t know what their limit is, and they don’t know when to give up.That makes them more dangerous than any team in the NFL right now. And it’s time to start thinking just as crazy as they do.The playoffs are going to be fun.
