A murder investigation has been launched after a young, up-and-coming singer was fatally shot in a parked car in Los Angeles in the early hours of Saturday, police said.
Maria de la Rosa, 22, who has released music as DELAROSA, was identified by the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) on Monday, as one of several victims targeted by what witnesses described as two male suspects who approached a vehicle and opened fire in an ambush-style attack.
...Why It Matters
Gun violence in Los Angeles has been on a downward trend, with homicides falling by about 26 percent last year and continuing to decline in 2025, putting the city on track for its lowest homicide total in decades, according to research by gun violence prevention group Everytown.
While LA’s improvement mirrors a national drop in gun homicides—down nearly 17 percent across major U.S. cities—its rate remains higher than the national average, and certain neighborhoods still experience concentrated violence.
According to the Giffords Law Center, women in the U.S. are 21 times more likely to die from gun violence compared to women in other high-income countries, and more than 6,500 women die from gun violence in the U.S. each year.
What To Know
The shooting occurred around 1.25 a.m. on November 22 in Northridge, near Bryant Street, east of Tampa Avenue. Police said the motive was unclear and no arrests have been made.
De la Rosa sustained gunshot wounds and succumbed to her injuries in hospital, police said. The outlet KTLA reported that two other victims were in critical condition as of Saturday morning.
The singer and influencer last posted on Instagram on October 30, where she teased new music. “Busy cookin in the Stu. don’t call me. It’s about that time,” she shared to her following of more than 40,000 people on the platform.
The 22-year-old had been starting to break through in the Latin music scene this year, and released a single titled 'No Me Llames' in August.
Tributes have flooded in on social media.
