Vero Beach football honored slain deputy Terri Sweeting-Mashkow and locksmith David Long at the team's Region 3-7A championship game on Friday, Nov. 28.
The Fighting Indians Booster Club distributed 800 green remembrance pins to fans and provided stickers for the players' helmets ahead of Vero Beach's game against Dr. Phillips at the Citrus Bowl.
AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementSweeting-Mashkow and Long were killed in a shooting while serving an eviction notice on Nov. 21 at the Bermuda Club community residence near Vero Beach. Sweeting-Mashkow was the second line-of-duty death in about 100 years of the Indian River County Sheriff's Office.
Vero Beach football, donning green stickers on helmets to honor the shooting's victims, defeated Dr. Phillips 49-23 to win the region championship and advance to the program's first state semifinal since 1998.
The Fighting Indians will find out their opponent and location for the Class 7A semifinal after qualifying teams are reseeded by the FHSAA over the weekend.
