It has not been a banner few weeks for Bayern Munich captain Manuel Neuer.

The goalkeeper was excellent in August, September, and October, but November has brought some tough times for the veteran.

Shaky performances vs. Union Berlin and SC Freiburg were followed up a bad 3-1 loss to Arsenal where it could be said that Neuer should have stopped the first goal and the last goal. The performances vs. SC Freiburg and Arsenal also came just days after Neuer was reported to be sick.

Still, even with a few shaky performances and a known illness (which might or might not still be affecting him), Neuer could suit up vs. St. Pauli — despite a perfectly capable back-up in Jonas Urbig being available to allow Neuer to take a one-game respite.

“When we decide to change the goalkeeper, it’s always in consultation with Manu. We didn’t do that this time, and I have to consider what’s best for the team. We also want Jonas Urbig to improve – but the timing needs to be discussed calmly; we haven’t done that yet. I’ve only been focused on St. Pauli,” said Kompany (as captured by @iMiaSanMia).

Part of what makes Neuer so great is his unwavering desire to compete and his intense love of playing the game. You can see it in every match…however, those same traits can also cause a player to ignore what his body might be telling him.

It seems as if Kompany knows Neuer needs a game off, but what if Neuer objects? Is that doing what is best for the team?

Kompany will have to make that decision, but what do you say Bayern Munich fans, does Neuer have too much power to influence these kinds of decisions?
