It's been a minute since Adonis Creed last entered the ring, yet his next fight is still not in sight. Since development on a fourth installment of the Creed franchise began in 2023, after the success of Creed III, updates have been few and far between. Michael B. Jordan previously explained that the goal isn't to make another sequel for the sake of it, but to let things rest and let audiences miss the boxing series for a bit before returning. In a new interview, the Sinners star not only confirmed the film is still coming, but teased where the Rocky spin-off franchise could go next.
"Eventually, definitely," Jordan said in response to whether Creed IV was still in the cards. He wanted to emphasize just how important the series was for him ever since he donned the boxing gloves for the first time in 2015. Directed by the actor's frequent collaborator, Ryan Coogler, the original Creed was hailed as a legacy sequel done right, bringing new life to the world of Rocky and adding new layers to its characters while keeping the essential themes of an underdog story alive through Donnie, the son of Carl Weathers' Apollo Creed. Creed III also gave Jordan a chance to make his directorial debut and give his boxer what seemed like a fitting ending, defeating and reconciling with his old friend Dame (Jonathan Majors) and hanging up the gloves for good to focus on his family.
Although he's seemingly done all there is to do with the character, Jordan is adamant that there are other things and characters worth exploring, even if he's not the one in the ring. An eventual fourth film, which he'll reportedly still star in and direct, might branch out instead to explore everything around the titular fighter in a unique way compared to its predecessors.
"It’s a franchise that’s been really kind to me in a big way. I love MGM and Irwin Winkler and everything they’ve got going on. I think there’s a bit more story to be mined through that. Do I want to be in the ring boxing for the next 15 years? Not so much. But I think there are clever ways and interesting characters we’ve established that we might want to see where that goes, along with some introductions to new ones I have in mind. I still might be able to get a couple of really good swings at the franchise a bit more."
The 'Creed' Franchise Has No Shortage of Irons in the Fire
Of course, Creed will no longer be contained to just the big screen. Back at an upfront in May this year, Prime Video announced a new series titled Delphi that would further expand the scope of the Rocky universe by focusing on the next generation of fighters working their way up in the same gym that helped mold Adonis into the champion he became. A Drago spin-off has also been bandied about, with Dolph Lundgren and Florian Munteanu returning as the father and son duo and leaning into the franchise's themes of family. There were even talks about giving Creed's Deaf daughter, Amara (Mila Davis-Kent), a chance to shine as she follows in her father's footsteps.
Regarding the small-screen ideas and Amara, Jordan confirmed that those projects are going to keep carrying the torch for Creed going forward, so it doesn't have to rely on him. He understands that, like how Rocky eventually handed the reins to him, it'll be up to other characters beyond Adonis to keep this franchise fresh for years to come.
"We’re spinning off doing Adonis’s daughter, Amara’s story, the television show that’s picked up at Amazon. So you’ll be seeing different parts of the Creed-verse, I like to call it. These little IPs are going to keep the universe alive without it being completely reliant on just me to push it through the finish line every time as a boxer. I’ll be adjacent."
Details for Creed IV are still under wraps at this time. Delphi, similarly, has revealed little about who's involved. Stay tuned here at Collider for more about the future of the Creed universe as work continues on these various projects.
