The San Francisco 49ers never planned to start Brock Purdy as a rookie.

He was the last pick of his draft, Mr. Irrelevant. But two injuries later, the 'Niners had no choice.

Welcome to the origin story of Max Brosmer's first NFL start, which has been officially announced to be coming Sunday in Week 13 for the Minnesota Vikings against the Seattle Seahawks.

Carson Wentz has already been ruled out for the year, and with J.J. McCarthy dealing with a concussion this week, Brosmer gets the ball.

Brosmer one-ups Purdy -- he was undrafted entirely.

The rookie spent most of his college career at New Hampshire before finishing up nearby at the University of Minnesota.

He opened the season as QB3, having put together an impressive preseason behind McCarthy and Wentz.

But now, there's a real chance here.

Brosmer has impressed the people in the building in Minnesota. Can he impress on the field?

If he does, things could get interesting in a hurry.

Purdy went from unexpected starter to franchise quarterback in San Francisco.

No, that's not necessarily the most expected outcome for Brosmer. But it's not impossible.

McCarthy missed his entire rookie season and has now missed more games than he's played in year two, too. He hasn't been good enough when on the field, either.

Minnesota wouldn't want to move past McCarthy already, but the 49ers didn't want to give up on Trey Lance, at least on paper. But Purdy was the clear winner there once he played.

Could Brosmer do the same? There will certainly be a lot of intrigued eyes watching his first NFL start.
