In addition to making big moves like trading for veteran starter Sonny Gray, the Red Sox continue to look to add depth — especially with versatile positional players. To that end, they added a utility man with major league experience this week.

The club has reached a deal with 29-year-old Vinny Capra on a minor league contract, according to MLB’s transactions log. According to a source, the Red Sox identified Capra as a priority add in minor league free agency when the market opened late last month.

Capra’s deal includes a major league spring training invite and an opt-out/assignment clause on July 1 if he’s not in the majors then.

Capra, a former 20th round pick of the Blue Jays in 2018, has appeared in 67 major league games, including 47 in 2025 (split between the Brewers and White Sox). He struggled offensively, batting .125 with one homer, six RBIs and a .334 OPS in 105 total plate appearances. He made appearances at third base (137 innings), shortstop (93 innings) and second base (17 ⅔ innings). One of the more notable moments of his season came on July 3, when he was the victim of Clayton Kershaw’s 3,000th strikeout in Los Angeles.

Capra came up in Toronto’s system and debuted there in 2022 before being traded to Pittsburgh for former Red Sox catcher Tyler Heineman in April 2023. Six months later, he was claimed by Milwaukee, where he spent two seasons before being claimed by the White Sox on May 15. Capra also saw some work in both corner outfield spots at Triple-A with Chicago.

The Red Sox have plenty of utility options on the 40-man roster, including newcomer Tristan Gray and returnees David Hamilton, Vaughn Grissom, Nate Eaton and Nick Sogard. Capra profiles as a versatile depth option at Triple-A Worcester. He joins catcher Jason Delay and right-hander Osvaldo Berrios as early additions via minor league free agency this offseason.
