Go Ahead Eagles have fined their player Victor Edvardsen and apologized for his provocative gesture towards VfB Stuttgart’s Angelo Stiller in the Europa League.
"Go Ahead Eagles and Victor Edvardsen regret the incident yesterday. The club has fined Edvardsen €500 ($580), which will be donated to the club’s social services," the club from the Dutch city of Deventer said on X on Friday
AdvertisementAdvertisementAdvertisementThe 29-year-old Edvardsen clashed with Stiller during Stuttgart’s 4-0 win in Deventer and provoked him. The scene, in which Edvardsen touched Stiller's nose, caused a considerable stir online.
There was then a melee on the pitch. Stiller and Edvardsen were both shown yellow cards.
The club statement also carried an apology from Edvardsen.
"I would like to apologize for my behaviour yesterday. Things were said and done between us that do not belong on a football pitch," Edvardsen said.
"After the match I went into the Stuttgart dressing room to apologize. I have a role model position and must behave accordingly."
