Gerard Butler’s next movie is due to hit theaters in just a few weeks, but before its arrival on the big screen, one of his more recent action hits is gaining momentum on streaming. Butler stars alongside Mike Colter (Luke Cage) in Plane — the 2023 survival thriller following a pilot who finds himself caught in the middle of a war after his plane crashes in foreign territory. Plane is currently streaming on Netflix, where it exploded over the summer as one of the biggest streaming hits of the year. Before it leaves the platform on December 11, the film has surged back into the top 10 in several countries.
Plane features some riveting action sequences, which makes it that much more surprising that Lionsgate spent only $25 million on the making of the film. It also grossed $74 million at the global box office, making it a solid financial hit for the studio and yet another profitable actioner for Butler. It earned a Certified Fresh 78% from critics on Rotten Tomatoes and even a Verified Hot 94% on the audience-driven Popcornmeter. It was the highest-rated movie from fans of Butler’s career until earlier this year, when he starred in the live-action How to Train Your Dragon film.
Charles Cumming and J.P. Davis wrote the script for Plane and Jean-François Richet directed the film. Before his work on Plane, Richet previously directed The Emperor of Paris — a French period drama starring Olga Kurylenko and Vincent Cassel. He’s since transitioned into more mainstream blockbusters. He’s next been tapped to direct Mutiny, the action thriller headlined by Jason Statham that will be released on August 21, 2026.
When Does Gerard Butler’s Next Movie Come Out?
Gerard Butler will next star in Greenland: Migration, which is coming to theaters on January 9, 2026. Butler’s Greenland co-star, Morena Baccarin, will also reprise her role in the film, with Ric Roman Waugh returning to direct. After the first Greenland, which followed the Garrity family as they escaped from a world-ending disaster, the sequel will feature them returning to the world for the first time. Greenland: Migration will be released exclusively in theaters, and the film will not be available to watch on streaming until it finishes its theatrical run. The first Greenland is streaming on HBO Max to rewatch or catch for the first time ahead of its sequel’s premiere.
Be sure to watch Plane before it leaves Netflix on December 11 and stay tuned to Collider for more streaming updates.
