Since the start of Spy x Family, fans have adored the Forger family, hoping that the makeshift family would become a real one at the end of the series in a heartwarming, happy ending. However, recent revelations from the creator Tatsuya Endo suggest otherwise.

In a recent discussion with Takashi Saito, Tatsuya Endo revealed that he never set out to depict a family story with Spy x Family. Instead, he viewed the story as one that depicted separate individuals co-existing under the same roof. This revelation challenges the prevalent theory that the Forger family would have a happy ending, and instead, makes way for a more complex ending.

Spy x Family Creator Had Never Set Out to Depict a Family

Back in October 2025, Spy x Family released a new book by educator Takashi Saito called SPY x FAMILY: The Ultimate Family Theory - "The Power of Children" to Raise Adults. The book analyzed Spy x Family anime and manga to explore the concept of family.

While the book is only available in Japanese, a fan recently translated it into English, revealing the contents. The book explored several aspects of Spy x Family, but the one that stood out the most was about how the story was "never meant to depict a family."

When Takashi Saito shared his thoughts about how the Forger family started off as complete strangers but gradually grew closer, Spy x Family creator Tatsuya Endo made it clear that he had never set out to tackle any grand, socially relevant theme or anything like that.

"Even in my own mind, I don't really think of it as a "pseudo-family" story."

The creator shared that, despite what fans have come to believe, he never thought of his manga as a pseudo-family story. According to him, people consider it a family story because of its title "Spy x Family."

However, the truth is that, the title was something the editor Lin threw together as a placeholder title for their meetings. In fact, Tatsuya Endo found the previous title "Spy Family" "lame" and suggested using English lettering or adding an "x." That's how they finalized the title.

If Not "Family," What is Spy X Family About?

After hearing what Tatsuya Endo had to say about the story's title, Takashi Saito asked the creator if the "spy" side of the title carried more weight than the "family" side?

"It's more about how these separate individuals coexist under one roof."

According to Tatsuya Endo, while the three members of the Forger household do form a family of sorts, to him, they are simply unrelated people living under the same roof. He never thought of them as a "family" in a special sense. As per him, Spy x Family was more about how the three separated individuals coexist under one roof.

As such, considering that Tatsuya Endo does not view the Forgers as a family, there is a chance that the manga might end with the three individuals going their separate ways. Hence, for now, fans can only hope that the creator gives them the happy ending they have yearned for so long.
