Zootopia 2 has broken another record before its first full weekend in theaters even begins. 2025's Zootopia 2 is a sequel to a 2016 Disney movie that grossed more than $1 billion in theaters.

The new movie, which debuted on Wednesday, November 26 ahead of American Thanksgiving, also seems on track to hit that milestone after earning the second-best domestic box office previews for a Disney animated movie ever, behind the 2024 smash hit Moana 2.

Per Variety, Zootopia 2 has taken in $34 million during its opening day in China. This marks the highest-grossing single-day haul for any U.S. animated movie in the territory. It is also the best opening day gross for any U.S. movie in China since F9: The Fast Saga debuted in May 2021 and the tenth-best U.S. opening day in China ever.

This Chinese haul has pushed Zootopia 2's cumulative international gross to $41.6 million. Its grosses will continue growing, as it has only opened in 17 international markets so far and will have debuted in most major markets by the end of Sunday (with the exception of Japan, which gets the movie on the first weekend of December).

So far, Zootopia 2 has earned $80.1 million worldwide, which made the Disney animated sequel the 44th highest-grossing movie of 2025 worldwide before its first official weekend in theaters had even begun.

The success of Zootopia 2 comes just a few months after China made the homegrown animated title Ne Zha II the first movie to ever gross more than $1 billion in a single territory. It has since become the highest-grossing animated movie of all time, with its enormous worldwide total of $1.902 billion blasting past Inside Out 2's $1.699 billion.

Zootopia 2 can't quite compare with Ne Zha II, which had a $296.6 million opening weekend in China. However, its success could speak to an increased appetite for animated movies in the territory. While China has recently been more selective with what U.S. titles can come to theaters in the region, this could spell good news for the worldwide prospects of future American animated movies.

Other animated IP titles that will follow Disney's Zootopia 2 into theaters include Toy Story 5, Ice Age: Boiling Point, Frozen III, and Shrek 5, so it is entirely possible that the new movie's record could be broken sooner rather than later.
