MatPat, former host of Game Theory on YouTube, gets candid about Five Nights at Freddy's 2 changing the video game lore for the upcoming sequel movie. Matthew Patrick, known professionally as MatPat, has been involved in analyzing the franchise's lore since the first game was released in 2014. He's been cast in Five Nights at Freddy's 2 as Toy Bonnie.
However, the upcoming sequel film is poised to make some key changes to the game lore. While the end of Five Nights at Freddy's already did this, altering the timeline of William Afton's death, the sequel will be making even bigger changes. This includes the Toy animatronics running free and Mike returning to confront them, differing greatly from the games.
Speaking with DiscussingFilm about Five Nights at Freddy's 2 changing the game lore, MatPat explained how the franchise's story alters depending on the medium. Citing the books as an example, he explains how the story being told as a movie "dictates how the story takes shape." He believes the sequel stays true to the source material's themes despite the changes:
Here's the thing: if no one knows the lore, does the lore really exist? This idea that the lore is constantly malleable and it has a lot of recurring themes, but it changes depending on, kind of, the area that you're engaging with it. The books are a little bit different than the movies which is a little bit different from the games. And that ecosystem kind of allows you to recognize similar beats and similar rhymes to it, while also being okay with the changes. Because the medium ultimately dictates how the story takes shape. I think that they've done an incredible job of staying true to the essence of what it is, while still making the story relevant for movies.
The story of Five Nights at Freddy's 2 promises to be much different from the source material. The original game follows security guard Jeremy Fitzgerald as he survives five nights in the "new and improved" Freddy Fazbear's Pizza. However, the ending reveals the game is a prequel to the first, taking place in 1987, a significant year in the games.
The movie is taking a different approach, with Mike, Abby, and Vanessa returning as the core trio. The events will take place after the first movie too, with the spirits of the dead children contacting Abby for help as the Toy animatronics wreak havoc in their town. Trailers also hint at Afton coming back as Springtrap from the third game.
As MatPat states, the movies use the basis of the games and the themes in the lore to craft their own unique narratives. The first film did this by introducing Afton and Vanessa, who don't appear until later installments of the franchise. By remixing aspects of the source material, the films stand out while still maintaining important, familiar elements.
With MatPat excited about the way Five Nights at Freddy's 2 is utilizing the game lore, it sounds like there could be plenty of other differences in store when the movie arrives. Since it's coming out in just one week, the other changes that come about will likely remain secret until its release.
Five Nights at Freddy's 2 arrives in theaters on December 5, 2025.
